Are verb objects and verb complements used more or less the same way in Chinese?

I'm going over verb complements on the Chinese Grammar Wiki, and I was just wondering if a verb object word like 發燒 would be used the same way compared to a word like 躺下 which should be a verb complement. Is there a good way to know how both types are used differently in sentences? Thanks.
