Lemongrass Chicken Banh Mi

Lemongrass Chicken Banh Mi, thewoksoflife.com

You’d be hard-pressed to find a more satisfying sandwich than this lemongrass chicken banh mi. When I’m at a Vietnamese restaurant, I rarely order a banh mi because I’m always swayed by the prospect of that other giant of Vietnamese cuisine, pho. However, the minute I had assembled these magical sandwiches and took a bite, […]

Tips for heading to China.

Hi there y’all. I was planning on studying in China next summer and wanted to know what some good resources for teaching myself Chinese might be. For background, I’ve already taken a semester of college Chinese and have worked through the first eight chapters of Integrated Chinese. I feel pretty comfortable with how I should go about learning Chinese characters and I can always go to a Chinese professor if I need help with pronunciation or particularly tricky grammar. I’m mainly looking for grammar and vocab resources as well as a way to practice listening and speaking. Thank you all in advance. Also, any tips for how I should behave when in China, particularly Beijing, would also be appreciated.

The chairmans bao... Worth the subscription?

Im living in china and studying HSK 3 but throughout my time here i have actively avoided learning 汉字 .(Un)fortunately the time has come that i feel i simply cant progress without it catching up.

Ive worked hard this past week and would say i can recognise about 100 out of the 150 that are in HSK 1 and am now looking for materiels to start reading properly. I figured something like the chairmans bao might be a good place to start. Any opinions for or against?

Ps anyone reading this who is starting out with chinese... Dont be like me... Learn the charactors from day 1 and save yourself all kinds of hassle.

New Mandarin Companion Breakthrough Level just launched, novels written using only 150 characters

Really excited to let you know about the new level of books we just released. It's the new Breakthrough Level, and it's our simplest, most easy-to-read books yet. They are full-length chapter books but written using only 150 most basic Chinese characters, ones that you are most likely to know as a learner. Here is a little bit about how this came about.

How It Started

Since we started Mandarin Companion back in 2012, we have pursued a vision of a revolution in learning Chinese marked by the advent of easy-to-read and interesting (key word interesting) books in Chinese. Few things have the impact on any language development as does reading and the mounting testimonials from readers is a testament to the impact it is making around the world.

As the years went on, we came to realize that for many learners it may take several years before they reach the point when they are able to read the Level 1, 300 character, stories. In discussion with many learners and teachers, they loved the concept of the books, but most needed something even easier to read. We also found that in Chinese programs all over the world, students tend to drop out after a year or two. A significant reason behind this has to do with the slow progress of learning Chinese in that it can take years before a learner feels like they can do anything with the language.

When John and I discussed these various issues, we decided that we need to do our part to help this generation of learners to read Chinese at an earlier stage, to help them get a “win” earlier, to make the goal of reading in Chinese even more obtainable. This was the genesis of the Breakthrough level.

The Breakthrough 150 Character Level Standard

When we started out, we knew we had to make it as simple as possible AND interesting, two things that are at odds with each other. We floated out different numbers of characters until we settled on only 150 and, at the time, we weren’t even sure if we were going to be able to write anything good with that little!

We had to set some strict rules for this level because otherwise it can be too easy to compromise your standards for the sake of the story. Once you begin adding a harder character, it becomes easier to add one more, and then one more, and before you know it your book is filled with words and characters that slow down a reader, tripping them up every paragraph. We all know it’s hard enough to read at these early stages!

In this new level, you’ll only find the most useful and common characters and words. For example, all of the 150 characters in the Breakthrough Level are a subset of the Level 1 standard. On top of that, all of the key words in the Breakthrough standard fall within the 300 characters in the Level 1 standard. That means you’ll never waste time learning characters that are not important to your fluency at this stage of Chinese.

Breakthrough Titles

We will be releasing five Breakthrough Level books by mid 2019. We found that due to our constraints it was nearly impossible to adapt existing stories so we wrote our own! All of these are original stories written by John and myself. Here is a preview of the upcoming books.

  • My Teacher is a Martian 《我的老师是火星人》- Two good friends notice their teacher is very strange, so strange that they begin to suspect that he is actually from Mars.
  • Xiao Ming, Boy Sherlock《小明》- Xiao Ming would one day grow up to be a great detective, but it all started when he was just a boy.
  • In Search of Hua Ma《花马》- All he wanted to do was give his mother a simple present, instead a son finds himself transported across China on bizarre quest…
  • Three Friends《三个朋友》- Two guys have been friends forever, but what happens when they fall for the same girl in college?

First Release: The Misadventures of Zhou Haisheng

The Misadventures of Zhou Haisheng is the first book in the Breakthrough Level. It follows the antics of 9 year-old Zhou Haisheng whose parents own a small noodle shop. Always well-intentioned, he finds ways to help out his hard-working parents with the family business. Whether its inventing his own noodle recipe, delivering the wrong order to a customer, or resorting to extremes when a competing noodle shop opens across the street, Haisheng manages to combine his mischief and wit to save the day.

You can read a sample on our website or get your copy today on Amazon or Kobo! We are ever grateful for all of the support from all of our readers. We’ll be releasing even more titles this year and be sure to have a listen to our podcast. 加油!

Help with Chinese name

Hello, everyone~

I'm having a bit of a dilemma that I'm looking for some input on~ I will also include a TL;DR at the bottom~

So my grandma was Generally Asian/Mexican (she was mostly Chinese with Korean and Filipino heritage as well), but her Asian heritage was overshadowed by her Mexican heritage since we come from a predominantly Mexican area in the States. Because of this, I never really grew up with too strong of a connection to my Chinese side. I do speak Mandarin (albeit like 10 year old) and some Cantonese but a lot of that was learned from reading and pestering my grandma to teach me whatever she knew (her roots are from GuangZhou mostly).

Anywho, nowadays i do feel like I want to continue to learn about Chinese culture and language. The dilemma is that my grandma never really gave me a traditional Chinese name, she tended to just use my english name. I was eventually given the name 寧天 but i think only because it has a similar sound to my english name. My grandma's Chinese family namen is 安,so altogether my name is 安寧天 (An Ning Tian)。Recently I've been thinking of spending a few years teavelling around East Asia after I graduate from university next year and was hoping to find a name that suits Chinese, Korean, and Japanese. When I looked back, my korean family surname is Young (영, 永). I think this rolls off the tongue better in Korean and Chinese than 安 Ahn. I also decided to just use my nickname Niko since it seems to be easy to pronounce in Korean and Japanese. The problem is that the Chinese variant of Niko 尼科 (Ni-Ke) doesnt really appeal to me, so i spent a few days researching and came across the characters 猊凱. I really like these characters and the meaning since they are pretty similar to the actual meaning of Niko in general, but I'm not sure how these characters would look to a native speaker. I don't want to have a silly or ridiculous name in Chinese, so I would really appreciate any feedback or suggestions on names!

TL;DR: Changing my Chinese name from the one my grandma gave me, 安寧天, to 永猊凱,but want to make sure the characters dont come across silly or ridiculous.

Help an idiot craft a confession

Hey all,

I've recently been seeing this girl from China. We've gone on several dates together and message pretty frequently. It's gotten to a point where I want to confess my feelings and push our relationship to the next level OR fail trying.

My Chinese is reasonably good for an ABC, but I want to rehearse and make sure this message is perfect and doesn't sound awkward/ inappropriate in Chinese. Please help me review the message below:

我想抓住这个机会来跟你说几句话。这 段时间 跟你在一起, 我感觉的非常幸福。

你知道吗? 我喜欢你。

所以, 我希望在下去我们可以继续慢慢的走到一条路上。

Many thanks!

Free worksheets for grammar practice and sentence writing/translation?

I'm going through chapters 8-13 of Integrated Chinese this summer before school starts so I can skip intermediate, so I'm trying to find grammar worksheets that go along with the textbook or just have the same grammar points so I can put them into use with some structure. I'd ask my teacher but she can't send me her worksheets because of this thing going on with my University. I found some on the website ling ling Chinese but they don't cover all the grammar points listed in the chapters and the worksheet exercises aren't very in depth/ good for extensive practice. Sorry for formatting, on mobile.

Suggestions on handwriting?

I'm starting to learn Mandarin and am struggling with the words. The words/shapes confuse my brain. Is there a useful handwriting type book for tracing? I found a ton on Amazon but wasn't sure if any were especially good/useful.

Exclamation “Ho!” With fist pump?

I saw a piano performance by a music student from China. The audience was a mixed group of young Chinese/Koreans. When he took his bow at the end his Chinese/Korean friends in the audience shouted “Ho!” And put their fists in the air. He responded the same. “Ho!” While bowing with the fist in the air in front of him like a victory fist pump.

What is this? I want to learn more about it.

I posted in r/Korea and: it’s not Korean, may be

1) hao 好 2) Cantonese

Thanks!

learning mandarin question (order)

hello, I've only just began learning mandarin. I finished learning how to correctly pronounce tonal pairs and syllables in pinyin next, the guide recommends I learn strokes. However, I still have practically 0 knowledge on any of the words actual semantics. is it worthwhile to learn some vocabulary before I begin to learn strokes or should I follow my guide and learn strokes before vocabulary? I attempted to start Duolingo however, they use a lot of strokes rather than pinyin. are there any vocabulary learning apps or websites that use pinyin? thanks for any responses!

Changing study methods

Hello! I started studying mandarin on my own about a year ago and being fairly new to language learning, I think I've mad a few mistakes, so I need help on how to change how I work.

The old study method:

I used to study from a book, copy down the characters from each chapter ~10 times each and add the single characters to an anki deck and then add the words I learnt to another deck. With this I would read every once in a while. I realized my comprehension was very bad compared to the vocabulary so decided to change things !

The new study method:

Still getting my vocabulary from the same book, still copying each character ~10 times but now only putting actual words in an anki deck, and this time, for each word adding a few sentences with that word in a sentence deck. Obviously reading on the side too.

Add your own study method ! And please tell me if you have any recommendations.

Should I start over?

Hi, I’m about two thirds of the way through the hellochinese curriculum, which uses both pinyin and characters next to each other under my current settings. I feel that I am learning a lot, but my issue is that I am not learning the symbols but rather the pinyin. Of course I can’t just turn off the pinyin or I would be completely lost. Should I restart only learning with characters or can this be something I do later? Thanks.

When first starting, is there a standard order of topics that you should learn before others?

I've been browsing the sidebar for a while and have noted some apps and resources, and I've read the guide over in /r/languagelearning, but I am still not 100% sure where to begin to get the bare-bone basics for simplified mandarin.

This link in the sidebar's starter guide, as well as several of the starter posts, have mentioned that learning pinyin should be the first thing to learn, but after this, the advice seems to vary. The link above is saying that you should learn stroke order and then the "kangxi radical list" to better understand how characters are broken down, but I've also come across posts saying that it's not entirely beneficial and is generally just used for indexing; i.e., it doesn't help you memorize vocabulary any better or understand why characters are written the way they are or even how to write them.

However, I've read an article or two about breaking characters down into phonetic and semantic parts or something to achieve the above results, and I was wondering if there's a greater extent of things to learn about before jumping into some basic vocabulary that I'm not aware of yet. Basically, I don't know the extent of content that exists that I should look up and wanted some input on where to begin. I think grammar is quite interesting, but once again, I feel like there's limitations on what I can study and understand because I lack the vocabulary to understand the entire sentence yet - so while basic syntax rules might make sense, applying them well is harder if you can't read the examples.

So, would it make sense to learn pinyin/tones/proper pronunciation first, followed by like HSK1 vocab, and then dive into some grammar and basic sentence structures afterwards? Should you try and supplement these with auditory media and work towards that at the same time or focus on one aspect at a time? What important things am I excluding here?

Sorry if I asked a lot, I'm just trying to put together some guidelines. I would just take a university class, but my school doesn't offer it so I am trying it out by myself for now.

Thanks

Software recommendation for reading/writing

I started learning Mandarin 6 months ago with Mango Languages (approx. 150+ hrs) . The software is amazing in my opinion. They do an extraordinary job developing vocabulary, explaining grammar and providing characters + Pinyin. Unfortunately, they don't provide many resources to help with the actual reading/writing. I'd like to make more of an honest attempt at writing / reading so I'm looking for software recommendations.

Tldr; need software beginner recommendations for reading/writing Mandarin.

一分钟多 ❌一分多钟 ✅

We use "多" to express approximate amounts:

五千多 over five thousand dollars

If there is no measure word, we add “多” after the quantity:

一年多 ✅

If there is a measure word, we use the construction # + measure word + 多 + noun:

一个多月,一个多星期,一个多小时 ✅

一个月多,一个星期多,一个小时多 ❌

Except

一天多,一分钟多 ❌

一两天,一分多钟 ✅

Interesting HSK6 listening practice?

Hi, going to try and take this test soon, the reading and writing will kind of just be formality for me, but my listening isn't as good. Anybody know good resource for listening? I want something interesting, not just practice test, I would rather just wing it than take practice tests.

So better question is, what native material should I listen to that best matches the content of HSK6 tests?

When I took hsk5 the listening sometimes seem like a different language than Chinese, not like TV or movies I watch. So maybe news channel would be best?

Thanks

I am an ABC who speaks and understands mandarin fluently but cant read or write much.

我是美国出生的中国人。我现在想多学一点中文。我在家里跟我父母讲中文。但是,我不太会写和读中文。

I never bothered studying chinese either so my grammar might not be great.

Anyways, is there any type of resource you guys would recommend for me? I pretty much have the listening and speaking portion down, I just want to learn more chinese characters so that I can text message my family from back home.

Out of curiosity, how is the Duolingo tree for Mandarin for you guys?

I’ve been using HelloChinese and I personally like it much better than Duolingo. However, Duolingo has more words and phrases. I also heard it’s really inaccurate though. Your thoughts?

Should I avoid Taiwanese TV until I become proficient at listening to the Mainland Chinese accent?

I'm still quite a noob, only knowing less than 2K characters/7k words, and virtually unable to listen to spoken Chinese unless it is repeated over and over again.

I want to start practicing my listening skills and figured TV/movies would be a good place to start. Apparently, most of the Chinese TV market is dominated by Taiwan, or at least all of the good content comes out of Taiwan.

My goal is to learn "standard Mandarin" i.e. whatever is theoretically spoken in the mainland. I figure that it would be best to avoid the Taiwanese accent until I become proficient, as it might confuse me and perhaps teach me to speak with a Taiwanese accent or to use words that are more common in Taiwan than on the Mainland.

Is my concern valid or should I ignore it and dive right in?

Why not just use pinyin?

Is pinyin good enough to be used potentially to write everything in Chinese without losing meaning?

If so, was it ever considered to switch to pinyin instead of the beautiful characters to make it easier to learn to write?

Chinese Videos English subtitles

I began learning Mandarin just three months ago so I've still got a little while to go before I can watch videos in Mandarin without English subtitles.
Do any of you have any recommendations for particular websites, YouTube channels or streams which post videos in Mandarin with English subtitles?
I've found this to be a great way of improving my German. I was watching German daily news broadcasts with English subs then I was happy to realise after a while that I no longer needed the subs.
I haven't had as much luck so far with trying to find Chinese equivalents. And with German my teachers were always able to provide recommendations, whereas I've been learning Chinese by myself.

Many thanks in advance!

Grammar Question: Word order of 又 vs 再 in clauses w/ helping verbs

My teacher brought this up and now I want to know:

When there are two verbs in a sentence (one's a helping verb) and you want to use 又 or 再, why is their placement different?

I got these example sentences from a native:

  1. 昨天下雨,今天下雨了,明天又會下雨。
  2. 今天會再來。

It seems like when you use 又, it goes before both verbs, helping verb & main verb (會 & 下)

But when you use 再, it goes between the helping verb & main verb, 會 & 來 (unless you really do want to modify the helping verb itself, but usually that's not what people mean).

So...why do these two words for "again" not go in the same place in a sentence, even though they're both adverbs?

Don't know why, but the difference makes intuitive sense to me...I think.
