Boya Chinese

Hello!!

I've noticed at the universities in China, the programs teach foreign students 书面语 which I always found annoying to learn when I studied in China. Why are so many universities in China like PKU, Tsinghua, Fudan, etc teaching shumianyu to beginners and people in the intermediate levels? When I was in China at PKU we used the Boya Chinese series which I absolutely hated with a passion, because the content and vocab were kind of useless. When I got back to the US (and mind you I will be in Advanced Chinese 1 next semester), the person in charge of the Chinese language department said that they don't even teach shumianyu because of how badly it translates into speaking. I understand why it would be taught to the advanced students in China, however is it really the best thing to teach it to the beginner and intermediate students? I even have native Chinese speaking friends who say that they've never used shumianyu even when they're writing papers and such.

I would like to know why the Boya Chinese series along with the Chinese universities teach shumianyu to foreigners? Wouldn't it be better to focus on 口语 and then once they get advanced enough in that, then they can learn 书面语?
