Syllable combinations vs. polysyllabism

Since in Standard Mandarin there is a large number of possible syllable combinations that do not exist, which is the linguistic explanation for polysyllabism being the main historic solution to avoid even higher degrees of homophony?

I do not think this has been due (only) to pronunciation constraints, since many absent possible syllables in the Pinyin table are just like existing ones, e.g. dian nian tian diu niu, but not *tiu.
