Is it risky to try to learn Mandarin and Cantonese at the same time?

My family speaks Cantonese and there's an increasing social pressure for me to communicate with them as they're getting older. At the same time, it would be of great benefit for my job to learn Mandarin.

For the record, I'm not completely new to either language; I attended some weekly language classes back when I was 8-10 for Cantonese, and 12-14 for Mandarin. Unfortunately, I never really had to use them for the past 20 years, so I only remember the very basics.

Would it be foolish to try to learn both at the same time?

My main concern is getting things mixed up. I know the two are really not all that similar in terms of pronunciation and some vocab (trad vs simplified), but I'm worried this may hurt rather than help.

Has anyone else tried learning both? What are your experiences?
