Using 了 vs 以后

I have embarked on the journey to understanding 了. I know it's gonna be a long journey, but I'm ready. I'm gonna have lots of questions, and here's one of them.

So I think I understand the completed action use of 了. But before I learned about 了 being used that way, I thought we were using 以后 to convey the same message. So, is there a difference between these two sentences?

1）明天我下了班跟朋友去旧金山吃晚饭。

2）明天我下班以后跟朋友去旧金山吃晚饭。

Are they even both correct? If they are, does one sound more natural than the other? Do they have different nuances to them?
