Simplified vs Traditional Popularity

I was recently looking into taking up Mandarin as my next language, but I've come to a crossroads. Which writing style would be more common for books/online media/video gaming? Is it more common to see someone write in simplified or traditional? Is it common to find mainland Chinese people to chat with in video games?
