Is there a difference between 相比 and 比 when used to perform a comparison?

The apps that I have used have always introduced 比 to compare two things, like [noun1]比[noun2][adjetive]. However I have seen sentences elsewhere that look identical except that it uses 相比. Google will translate each sentence the same.

Is there a difference between use? If not, is one or the other more common?
