I have been studying Chinese for the past 7 years (3 at uni, then a break while I worked not speaking Chinese and now I have finally moved to China to get to fluency) and the app I have always used is called Hanping Pro (not sure if available for iPhone but I have Android). It cas the camera function which works fantastically, you can search through handwriting input, voice, English or pinyin. But the feature that I have appreciated the most has been the ability to export flashcards directly to Ankidroid, in the 10 weeks I've been in China and in classes I have used this feature and now have 3500 flash cards that I am working my way through and my reading ability has gone through the roof. I've been doing around 1.5 hours a day of flashcards and, while a hassle at times has really been helpful for recognition (and tones as well as there is a native speaker recording exported with the flashcards that you can play as well). One last thing about Hanping is the customer support is top notch, I have asked a couple of questions over the years and always have been responded to with helpful and timely info.
