Learning Simplified and Traditional Characters at the same time?

I'm taking Mandarin in college, and the professor uses simplified characters for the course (I'll have this semester and next semester). However, if I do visit a Mandarin speaking area for an extended period of time, it would probably be Taiwan, and hopefully I'll visit January 2020. Does it make sense for me to learn traditional characters in my own time, and use simplified just for my course (it's a required language course, so I can't drop it)? Or should I focus all my time on simplified for now?
