"ng" sound 4th tone GR question

Hi, I was looking into Gwoyeu Romatzyh because that makes a lot more sense to my brain than Pinyin and when you write syllables that end in "ng" (e.g. "feng", "shong", "cang", etc.) they're written as "nq" ("fenq", "shonq", 'tsanq", etc.).

Does anyone know why the "G" is written as a "Q" and what the specific sound here is supposed to be?

I've listened to lots of pronunciation guides and it always sounds like a "G".
