Is 小白 (xiaobai) offensive or is it a term of endearment?

My one friend (native Chinese speaker) has me in her phone as xiaobai (not in characters, but in pinyin), and while I know what it means, I don't know if she means it jokingly or if she really thinks I'm naive/stupid. Can it be used in a friendly way or does it always have a negative connotation?
