What is a chinese name and how do i get one?

So my chinese friend asked me the other day, whether or not I have a chinese name. It was an offhand comment, the sort of small talk one makes as one is doing something, at the time I had no reply and so didn't know what to say. She'd been putting her baby to sleep and I'd spent a great deal of time thinking over the question.

What constitutes as a good Chinese name? Do I change my last name too?

And how do I go about it?
