studying advice?

hi all

i've been attempting to study chinese for months now, but i cant seem to find the right place to start and what to use to take notes.

i started with rosetta stone since i get it for free via my library, but that didn't focus much on grammar and writing characters.

i then tried some apps (duolingo/hello chinese/etc) but i learn much better when i write things down so those didn't help.

i'm now using a textbook and some online resources, but i feel like i'm all over the place. im learning grammar and characters and pronunciation all at the same time and it's really overwhelming and confusing?

where exactly should i start? i know someone said to learn the most common characters first before anything else, but i'm not sure that would really help me.

also! i need some notetaking advice! how do you guys set up your notes? i currently have a binder separated into three sections - vocab, grammar and writing, but it's not really helping so i'm thinking of switching to a regular old spiral. any advice would be appreciated!

thanks!
