Hello! I decided to share my iTalki experience here.
I'm not really a good writer nor a story teller so please pardon any mistakes and weird sentence structures ㅠㅠ.
So, I've been wanting to learn Chinese and I even posted a while back here about how to study Chinese. Since I was having a hard time I decided to hire an online teacher on iTalki. I've had a Korean teacher before for TOPIK before so I'm very much aware of how iTalki works.
This is how I found my current teacher. First, I checked out the reviews of each teacher that I took notice of. I actually focused on the amount of lesson each of their students took with them. Some took 10 to 90 lessons with 1 teacher. That only means that the teacher is good, right? Second, the price. Some displays $10 dollars but when you check their curriculum they're around $20+. Price is important to me because I don't want to spend a lot of money esp if the teacher isn't that good. Third, I check the books/materials they use to teach. I messaged each of them and asked them questions about it. That's how I found my current teacher.
I first booked a trial lesson with her. When the video call started, she wasted no time! There was no self-introduction and whatsoever. She went straight to teaching me the pinyin and tones. She has clear pronunciation and she's not even one bit intimidating. She corrected me in a nice manner and encouraged me a lot saying it's okay to make mistakes. She also gives a lot of advice on how to remember tones. I fell in love with her style of teaching so I booked a 10 lesson package right after the trial lesson.
Now, I've been having lessons with her for a month and I actually just finished my first 10 lessons with her! I take 2 lessons every weekend for an hour. We're using Developing Chinese Elementary Course. I actually booked 20 more lessons with her since I'm so eager to finish the book. Every lesson she makes me review the previous stuff I learned. She asked me tons of questions and I answer in Chinese. She corrects me every time I make a mistake. We proceed to learning new vocabs, grammar, and reading passages. I like that she makes me translate passages in either Korean or English (She knows Korean which is a plus for me) to check if I understood them correctly. My favorite part is when she ask me to make sentences on my own by asking me questions. Seriously my teacher is awesome and I can't believe her lessons are only $12.90/hour. I really enjoy her lessons. I recently checked out HSK Standard Course I and OMG I actually learned everything that's on the book already with my teacher and also some from book II!
Anyway, I'm just sooooo happy that I found the perfect teacher for me! I get really excited whenever I learn something new each lesson especially when I can express things now in Chinese even though it's still basic. Learning Chinese makes me so happy ㅠㅅㅠ
+ I also want to add that I only had one bad experience with one teacher. It was our first lesson and she wasted 45minutes on 'self-introduction'.
