Hoping to get some clarity on word order

I'm working my way Pimsleur right now, and I came across a couple of phrases where the word order confused me:

• He lives in Beijing - 他住在北京

• He works in Beijing - 他在北京工作

I've gotten to a point where I just naturally know the correct word order, but I just don't understand it. Can someone help me understand the differences here?
