What's the meaning of 机敏?

Different dictionaries seem to give quite different definitions of 机敏.

Does 机敏 have two different definitions? Or does the word vary according to regional use?

If I want to say something like "Even though the dog is old, it is still alert and responsive" what word would you use for "alert" there? (And if you would not use 机敏, when would you use that word?)
