Usage of 的 in 李美上了五個星期的暑期班

Could someone explain to me why 的 is there? I've looked it up on the grammar wiki and I can't seem to find an explanation.

Also: In the sentence 李美在上海住過五個月, is 五個月 the object, since the pattern is 過+object? As in: has lived in, and the "lived in" applies to 5 months?
