Looking for story recommendations for 2nd year class

I'm going to start having my students read and discuss short stories soon, and I'm just throwing this out there in case someone has a great suggestion. They have gone through Beginning Chinese by John DeFrancis and know 500+ characters and a good foundation in grammar. I'm hoping to find a serialized soap opera kind of story and a set of easy paragraph descriptions of various historical, geographical, social etc. issues. I have some things I want them to use, just trawling for extra suggestions. Thanks.
