Learning Mandarin

Hey guys,

I've been thinking of learning Mandarin, but I have some (basic) questions. What are some good books/sites to learn the characters and pronunciations? Is learning the simplified characters enough or should I study the traditional as well? What is the best approach to learn Mandarin? Are there any good apps (besides Duolingo) to help me study? Or where can I find a list of the easiest/most useful words to learn?
