Learning characters when I hate textbooks

I have never enjoyed studying and wasn't particularly good at languages in School. Now middle-aged and a business owner, I have a burning desire to achieve business fluency mandarin in 2 years.

I started learning 3 months ago by completing the beginner, intermediate and advance Michel Thomas Mandarin courses which I enjoyed IMMENSELY. The course gave me a basic understanding of conversational Chinese, and I have since supplemented this learning by downloading ChineseSkill on iOS which is fantastic. In addition, I am having 2 hours of informal Skype tutoring per week with a Chinese native. Albeit, the skype calls themselves are not really a way of learning new content, but instead practising Chinese. I have found that it is virtually pointless learning mandarin purely from self-study. You HAVE to practise it.

I decided to learn some basic spoken chinese before hanzi because when I attempted to learn some characters a few years ago, I got totally bored and gave up. I really DO NOT enjoy reading textbooks. For me, learning has to be enjoyable or it goes in one ear and out the other. I am now keen to start recognising characters and hoping for some advice on the best way to go about this. Purchasing a text book is not an option for me as I know I will not enjoy learning from it, thus will not remember anything. In addition, learning to write is not desirable.

The apps such as ChineseSkill and HelloChinese are fantastic for learning vocab and pinyin, but I don't think they are great for character learning. I should also add that I have no use for writing chinese as I am not planning on writing anything, just being able to read.

Very much looking forward to your advice and thanks in advance.
