How best to improve conversation vocabulary as a background speaker?

I have a Chinese background and would just like to improve my vocabulary in terms of conversation. I have pretty much spoken chinese my whole life and yet whenever I go out with my parents and family friends they just say so much I don't understand. I have found this to be so overwhelming as now, when I go out with friends that are born in china, a lot of the current slang I just have no idea about.
