Help understanding parts of a text

Hello, I'm read the text above and I have some questions concerning some bits of it.

"生在北京长在北京..."

Is this even correct? Looks very messy and I don't know exactly what's trying to say.

"但从来没有过进去看一眼的冲动"

Why not "但从来没有进去过看一眼的冲动"? Why is 进去 not between 有 and 过?

"而故宫，"

Does 而 mean "and" here? Before a noun?

"甚至连水草也找不到

Why say 甚至 if you're gonna use the 连 ... 也 construction? Isn't that redundant?
