Emergency: I've been accepted to Uni in China, do I need my plane ticket first before I can apply for my student Visa?

I've been accepted to University in China, have all of my paperwork, and am a bit confused on one specific detail... Should I buy my plane ticket now and present it with all of the other required material for my X1 Visa or is it okay to not have a plane ticket when applying? I have a pre-existing tourist visa for China and urgently need to know if I should purchase the ticket now or if its okay to wait.
