Best Method For Learning Simplified Hanzi

What strategies do you use to learn and retain Chinese characters?

Several years ago I learned kanji through the book Remembering The Kanji. The book was a good start but the real benefit came from a user generated website kanji.koohii.com (essentially if a Chinese version existed it would be hanzi.kafei.com). This website was great because users would create their own mnemonic for the characters. A lot of my character knowledge comes from here (Japanese characters are Chinese traditional characters so some don't translate when learning simplified).

I truly wish their was a simplified hanzi version of the website I mentioned above but haven't found one yet.

This method may not even be the best way to learn the characters, but it's what I know. If you know of a better way please suggest it. I'm really trying to avoid route memorization.
