Answering Questions in Chinese

If someone asks you “你说中文吗？” (“do you speak Chinese?”), and the answer is “yes I do,” what is the best way of going about that answer?

说 说的 是 是的 etc. ? Even though I’ve been studying Chinese for the past 5 months or so, I’m still unclear on this. Oops.

In general, does anyone have tips on giving concise answers to questions like these (did you do the homework, do you like the color red, do you..., etc)?
