Am I wasting my time learning Mandarin? Everyone around me is discouraging me and telling me I'm wasting my time.

Apologies, English is not my first language.

Mandarin is amazing! I love this language. I spend a lot of time learning Mandarin and just recently passed my HSK-2 exam. For the first time in a long time I feel so happy for achieving something very few can achieve.

My issue is, lLiterally every single person around me has told me "don't give much time in learning this language, it's a waste of time." or "don't prioritize this language over everything you have. (I work and I'm doing my Masters degree at the same time) because it's useless" My job is very demanding (I'm a system administrator) and sometimes I work overtime or get overwhelmed with work. My workplace discourages me a lot; only handful of coworkers encourage me with learning the language. I have made it clear to my bosses and everyone around me that my education and learning Mandarin is more important than my job, i can say this because they can't fire me. It's very hard for them to find a replacement.

I fell into severe depression before, learning this language has given me a reason to wake up every morning. With all this negativity around me, i'm starting to think that they are actually right and Mandarin is useless. What do you guys think? what benefits will I get as a system administrator if I learned Mandarin? what should I tell them next time they discourage me?

I want to do my Doctors in China. In the meantime, I must stick with my job because it's my only source of income. Futhermore, I'm scared that if I went to China for my doctors degree and got it, I won't find a job when I return back to my country because finding a job here is very hard (I'm from Oman). Changing my job now is out of question because I get paid a decent amount of money, and there is no alternative option.

off topic question: How old were you when you started learning Mandarin? What's your level now? Any tips and recommendations?
