Is it better to learn Pinyin with the characters as a beginner if you plan to be serious with the language. (Read, write, speak, and understand fluently?)

I have been learning on Hellochinese with Pinyin but I wasn't retaining the characters only the pronunciations. I went to settings and made it where I can only see the characters. I don't know if that is helpful or not. Please share your thoughts.
