My intent for this post is to find out more about my options for studying Chinese in China with the following things in mind...
My ultimate goals concern studying ancient-medieval Chinese history with a doctorate degree as a professor.
I recently talked with a professor at my university and she explained how important it is to have good Chinese skills in order to be competitive when pursuing a doctorate degree and jobs in the U.S., arguing that studying the language in China is a must for this to happen.
Accordingly, I am curious as to what others think how it is best to approach this.
Here are some other things to keep in mind:
- I intend to learn Chinese as well as earn a master's degree in my respective field in China, (based off of my professor's suggestions).
- I am currently likely a solid HSK3 with 2 years of Chinese language experience in a undergraduate setting.
- I will also need to eventually learn Classical Chinese as well (based on the period of history I'm learning).
- I'd tend to trust my professors advice the most, especially since she went through and finished this process very recently, but I'd like some other opinions and ideas.
Finally, here are some of my questions I hope I could get some help with:
What are my best options to learn Chinese, Classical Chinese, and earn a Master's degree? Is it best to learn Chinese alongside a master's degree or ought one learn Chinese and then go to a degree program? and, which of these options give me the most benefit? (ie, government scholarships, stipends, etc).
In other words, what universities, private institutions, etc. are best for my background and intended career path?
Is there any good websites to search for government scholarships for these career paths? I have seen a few from the following webpages,

but I feel that this process is somewhat overwhelming when I am not sure what options are best for me in the first place.
Thank you for any help you all can give! I'd be glad to respond if you have any questions for me about explaining this or otherwise. I will likely go back to my professor soon to talk about what I learn here in my other online research.
