Hello everyone! I've become interested in self studying Chinese over the last year. I don't have any plan on moving to China, becoming 100% Fluent or any extreme long term goal like that. My expectations are very realistic. My main goal is to be able to have basic conversations with Chinese friends when I'm visiting San Francisco. I'd like to be able to have text message conversations with friends as well etc. I'm only able to study around a hour a day at the start of my studies. If I start to see progress over time, I'm sure I'll be able to make room in my schedule to up my study time. Now that you know my study situation and goals, I was hoping you could give me advice on achieving my goals. Is it possible to achieve these goals over time with my short amount study time? Is it true that the only way to develop correct tones is by studying in college or visiting China? Is self studying using programs and books enough without a tutor? I'm aware that anything is possible but I'm more interested in knowing if these goals are achievable for your average Joe picking up a Chinese study book for the first time. Thank you very much for your time!
