Learning Mandarin, but only in pinyin

I've been considering learning Mandarin, but I've heard a lot about the difficulty westerners have with the writing system. For me, writing/reading Mandarin in traditional or simplified characters would not be as useful or interesting, so I resolved to only learn pinyin and spoken Mandarin. So my question is: Does anyone have any advice on how to learn Mandarin in a way that doesn't involve Chinese characters? Duolingo for example has no option for this (as far as I can tell), and so it seems quite difficult to find resources to support this plan. For background: I speak English natively, and Italian as a second language.
