I can't understand oral Chinese unless I'm reading simutaneously.

I seem to have a strange issue. I simply cannot understand anything I'm listening to unless I listen to it while reading the Chinese characters simutaneously. For example, If I open up any of the Basic lessons on ChineseSkill Immersion or on ChinesePod Dialogue, I can barely understand anything - until I read the characters along with listening, and all of a sudden I have 100% comprehension. After listening and reading simutaneously one time, I can then continue listening to the lesson on a loop without reading, and my comprehension is fine. But when I move to the next lesson, I again can't understand anything.

As another example, I've read one of the beginner ChineseBreeze books multiple times. I then attempted to listen to the Slow audio, and barely understood anything. Then I went back and I reread the book along with the Slow audio, and I can now basically understand the audio on its own.

Is this normal for beginners? Should I just keep doing what I'm doing - first listening without reading, then listening and reading - and eventually it will start to click for me? Or is there something else I need to do to get ahead?
