How and why to attach 儿

大家好！

I'm a second year Mandarin student revising my early vocabulary notes from last year. Can someone better explain to me the usage of 儿 as a suffix? I've asked my professor, and the only impression I get is that it's just an optional addition. I see listed that 这里 (zhèlǐ) or 那里 (nàlǐ) are interchangeable with 这儿 (zhèr) or 那儿 (nàr) , but I don't really understand why use one over the other. I found this particularly confusing with 好玩儿 .
