Reasons for learning Chinese?

Hi everyone

I have a question for all of you who want to start or have already started learning Mandarin Chinese, and even those more advanced among you feel free to share. I was wondering what makes/inspires people learn Chinese?

For me, and this is many years ago, I was learning Japanese, and I got to like a beginner intermediate level (whatever that is). Unfortunately because of my school I couldn't keep up with my studies much. But then the unthinkable happened and I moved to a different town and school. I had more time on my hands so I figured, I'll continue with my studies! Then I had an intriguing thought! How about I learn another language?! Learning Japanese wasn't that hard for me so I thought another language could be a lot of fun. I went through my options and Mandarin sounded interesting. (I was so dumb I didn't even know Mandarin is "Chinese" and therefore statistically speaking the most spoken language in the world, I thought it's some no-name little language, oh dear). So I picked it up. My original aspirations were just "hey if I can just order beer in this language I'll be happy", and through overcoming some of the initial struggles with the tones it kind of stuck with me, beyond ordering beers. And I'm glad it did. It really opened up many doors for me. Literally, I can ask people to open door for me in Taiwan, and they do! (:D I'm just having a little fun at this point)

But I realize there are other people with other reasons. We are all little unique snowflakes and all that. So what kind of a snowflake are you? What are you aspiring to in terms of learning Chinese? What's your origin story?

Cheers Richard
