Vocabulary Jump

I have been studying Mandarin for a few years and am looking to significantly boost my vocabulary up from around 1700 words to 3,500 in a very short period(30'40 days). The original goal was to be able to for the most part to be able to comprehend Chinese television/films, boost general comprehension, and read more advanced day to day content such as the news in Chinese, but I soon realized I needed a much stronger foundation to actually do this. Are there any recommendations as to how I should learn the characters at a rapjd fast pace without simply forgetting them immediately after learning them. I am looking at around 40 characters a day (I will learn to write these new characters later) on Anki Droid, Also, I am working my way through the Hsk lists currently starting on hsk 5(Level wise I am probably at 4, but what I want to do is set the framework to improve rapidly by knowing a fluency level number of characters) are there any sources besides hsk for vocabulary that I should look towards for vocabulary?
