Time commitment going from zero to mildly conversant in Chinese?

I've recently decided to learn Chinese for one sole purpose- I want to converse with my Chinese mother-in-law and some other relatives that only speak Chinese. This is a rather modest goal, so I'm thinking I don't need to learn to read or write, just speak.

In addition, conversations with family don't really involve complex topics like discussing the Spanish Inquisition or the mating patterns of mountain lions, so I'm guessing I don't need to get to a level of full fluency, but obviously something more than a couple of sentences to get by as a tourist or something in China.

With this as my goal, my primary question is time commitment. I'm pretty goal oriented and really like to manage time. IF possible, I'd like to be able to have casual conversations with family within 6 months, 1 year at the most. If this is my goal, roughly how many hours/day should I put into studying (keeping in mind just speaking is the only goal).

Also, would there be any specific resources or ways of studying you'd recommend for this goal? Thank you!
