I'm 23, graduated with a STEM masters last summer and spent the last year in China working (English teacher) as a sort of break and to think about what I want to do long term. I had been to China a couple of times prior, for travel and for an internship so it wasn't entirely random. I only started learning the language 'properly' this past year though in my free time.
I have a place to study Chinese at a uni from September, the standard non degree program kind of thing. I am currently around HSK 3, I took lessons just a couple hours a week whilst I was there before and didn't do much work. If I am to go for another year, I would take the study seriously and not have a job interfering with that.
My query, I guess, is, am I being self indulgent? I graduated from a top uni, and have a solid set of internships etc, so many people I know are saying things such as why are you going back to China, get a 'real' job and get on the career ladder. Most of my peers have joined the rat race and if I wanted to, I could get a decently paid entry level graduate job now too.
My long term vision is still hazy but I know I want an international career. My thought process is, spending another year in China, improving my language would only add to that. It is something I enjoy and am willing to self fund.
I know the next question is akin to how long is a piece of string, but being roughly HSK 3 level now, after a year of solid work, could I feasibly be HSK 5? And have a base to build off in the future to use it in a job, or at least help in some way..
TLDR; Just spent a year working in China, am roughly HSK 3. Is spending my next year 100% studying Chinese in China a worthwhile idea? I want to learn for personal reasons, but would also like an international career, anyone have a 'success' story or a similar story?
Not sure if that made sense but any input appreciated
