I'm an ABC (American born Chinese, or born anywhere overseas but of Chinese ancestry). I can have conversation and read most stuff, and WeChat conversations are not a problem for me usually, as long as it's not of a too complex topic.
From the other ABC's i know, their chinese level ranges from close to zero, to somewhat decent (similar to my level), but still not as good as someone who grew up in a Mandarin speaking country.
And i don't think i've ever met an ABC that has the chinese level of a native (in terms of being able to speak like a local including the accent, be able to read complicated literature, understand advanced terms used in the language, the slang etc).
If they do exist i wonder how do they get their chinese to level while completed living in a non-speaking country?
Because studying is only part of it but in order to reach a level of a native chinese probably requires to have a complete chinese environment, and exposure to that environment since a young age.
Obviously someone born overseas but did their all their schooling in China is different.
Do they exist and how does one get to that level?
