Best way to memorize characters?

Hi all. A little background, back in 2005 I spent three semesters at BLCU after college and before getting a job. So I have some command of the basics. Cut to today, after years of barely any usage I finally found myself a private tutor to refresh and relearn my 中文。I have been very weak at memorizing since I was born and that still holds true today. I am using a textbook from 北大 called Boya, but between my job, and kid, I just don't have the time nor energy to religiously practice writing and reading everyday. I'm mid-30s with a family. Any ideas on how to improve on memorizing characters? Thank you
