If we are saying 'What do you say?' this translates to 'You say what?' in Mandarin. I get that the 'what' comes at the end and its elegance because you then just fill in the blank essentially where the 'what' is what they said. So it might become 'I say I love China'.
This is the same with 'Who is that?' becomes 'That is who?' and so the answer could be 'That is John'.
However, there are instances where the question word doesn't come at the end in Mandarin. Instead it can also appear at the beginning of the sentence. When might this be the case, and why does it deviate from the above rule?
